The Power of Gladness - The Pollyanna Effect

It’s that magical time of year. A busy term has finally ended. It is a time for life to slow down (slightly) and reflect.

As part of our family festivities, we consume large amounts of food and television. This year, after approximately 20 minutes of heated debates, we finally settled down to watch the Disney classic “Pollyanna”.

An orphan is sent to a small town following the tragic death of her parents. She lives with her Aunt Polly and spends her time meeting the townsfolk. When Pollyanna has a tragic accident, the townsfolk flock to her door, giving her back the gladness she had lost in light of her injury.

I have spoken about this film before in a previous post. It beautifully the showcases the power of positivity. Much like the pebble making ripples in the water, we all have the power the make positive change in our attitude, optimism and love.

As teachers we are so privileged to be able to make positive connections every single day. We do not know the ripple effect we will have in our students lives, nor the profound impact we can have on their educational experience. During my time at school, I feel fortunate to have happy memories of teachers that always made time for me and showed me so much care and support. I became a music teacher because of my own music teacher. I can confidently say I wouldn’t be where I am today without the care and support of others.

We are hardwired for connection.

Pollyanna did not know the impact she had on the townspeople until her injury - they flocked to her house in their hundreds to wish her well. This shows the impact she had on their lives and that one small voice has the strength to make a positive change.

I hope Christmas brings you a pocket of joy after a busy term. Just know that your students appreciate everything you give them every single day and you are making a bigger impact than you will ever know.
